Minutes of Inaugural Meeting
Grandfather Mountain Branch, Clan Cameron Association
July 14, 1968

The meeting was called to order by Dr. Harold Cameron of London, Ontario acting as provisional president.  After asking Mr. John B. Cameron, Jr. (Broadway, N.C.) to act as provisional secretary, Dr. Cameron announced that permission had been received from the Clan Cameron Association of Scotland for those assembled at Grandfather Mountain to form themselves into a branch of the Clan.   Dr. Cameron expressed his hope that the branch would develop into an association to further friendship among the members of the Clan in North America and one to develop and spread knowledge about and pride in, the Clan heritage.

The first order of business was the actual formation of the Branch of the Clan. The following resolution was read by Dr. Harold Cameron:

Resolved that we, members of the Clan Cameron gathered at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, form ourselves into an Association to be known as the Grandfather Mountain Branch of Clan Cameron Association.  This branch to operate under the rules and regulations of the Clan Cameron Association of Scotland, and to be affiliated with it.

The motion to adopt this resolution was made by Mr. John Cameron (Marietta, Ga.) and seconded by Miss Janet Cameron (Blacksburg, Va.). After discussion the resolution was unanimously adopted.

Dr. Harold Cameron then yielded the chair to Rev. Mr. V.A. Cameron (Waterbury, S.C.) who acted as temporary chairman for the purpose of nominating officers for the coming year.

Mr. Richard M. Cameron (Irmo, S.C.) moved that the following list of men be accepted as officers for the coming year 1968-1969:

  • President: Dr. Harold Cameron (London, Ontario)

  • Vice President: Mr. Dan R. Cameron (Raleigh, N.C.)

  • Secretary-Treasurer: Mr. John B. Cameron, Jr. (Broadway, N.C.)

  • Historian: Mr. J.B. Cameron (Broadway, N.C.)

  • Piper: Mr. Ruffin Hobbs (Greensboro, N.C.)

The motion was seconded by Mr. David Cameron (Augusta, S.C.). There were no nominations from the floor and the list was unanimously elected.  The President and Secretary took their places at the table.

It was moved by the Rev. Mr. V.A. Cameron (Waterbury, S.C.) and seconded by Mr. David Cameron (Augusta, S.C.) that the Secretary be instructed to write to the President of the Clan Cameron Association requesting that this branch become affiliated with the Association in Scotland.  There was no discussion and the motion was adopted.

Mr. Dan R. Cameron (Raleigh, N.C.) moved that the Secretary be instructed to write to Colonel Donald Cameron of Lochiel conveying our loyal best wishes, and requesting that he permit us to designate him as Chief of our branch of the Clan Association.  The motion was seconded by Mr. Michael Taylor (Johnson City, Tenn.). The motion was voted with no discussion.

It was moved by Mr. J.B. Cameron (Broadway, N.C.) that the annual membership fee be set at $2.00 for each clansman; this sum also to cover the cost of membership for his dependent family.  The second was made by Mrs. Dan R. Cameron (Raleigh, N.C.). In the discussion the possibility was mentioned of becoming an official sponsor of the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games.  The President pointed out that the cost of this would be $25.00 per year and there would not be enough money in the treasury to cover the expense, although he shared the feeling that this step should be taken.  Mrs. John B. Cameron, Jr. (Broadway, N.C.) suggested that perhaps the sum could be raised at the next meeting of the Branch by passing the "balmoral."   The matter of becoming a sponsor was left there.  The motion on the dues was then passed.

The Rev. Mr. V.A. Cameron (Waterbury, S.C.) then moved that the next meeting of the Branch be held on Sunday of the next Grandfather Mountain Highland Games, the second Sunday in July, 1969.  The time of the actual meeting to be announced at a later date in relation to the schedule of the program.  The motion was seconded by Mr. David L. Cameron (Augusta, S.C.) and adopted.

It was moved by Mr. Richard M. Cameron (Irmo, S.C.) and seconded by Michael Taylor (Johnson City, Tenn.) that the Secretary be instructed to write to Mrs. Agnes MacRae Morton and Mr. K. MacCourtney, informing them of the establishment of the Branch and giving his name as Secretary.  Adopted.

The President then raised the question of securing a Clan tent.  He was certain that his tent (used for this meeting) would be available for the next meeting, but that the members should be thinking of other possibilities for future years.  In the discussion the members expressed the general opinion that something should be done in the direction of purchasing a tent in the near future, but that it was not necessary of perhaps advisable at the present time.

Miss Janet Cameron (Blackburg, Va.) informed the assembly that her brother, Mr. Donald Cameron (Atlanta, Ga.), who had come to N.C. specifically for the meeting, was sick and unable to attend.  The President, on behalf of the members, expressed our best wishes for a speedy recovery of Mr. Cameron.

Mrs. Dan R. Cameron (Raleigh, N.C.) expressed the feelings of all the members by thanking the President, Dr. Harold Cameron, and his family for their efforts in organizing the Grandfather Mountain Branch of the Clan Cameron, and for the use of his tent for the meeting.

The Vice President asked that all members contact their relatives to come to the next Highland Games and become members of the Branch.

The President reminded all persons present to please sign the Clan register, leaving their names and mailing addresses.

The meeting was then adjourned on the motion of Mr. David L. Cameron (Augusta, S.C.) and the second of Mr. Richard Cameron (Irmo, S.C.).
